About the Brand - Olverum’s story is as rare as the oil itself. In 1920s Europe, amid a renewed passion for natural health, pharmacologist Edith Klein and her husband Franz Otto, a winemaker from the Mosel Valley, became devoted to essential oils. Inspired by a beloved blend at a spa in Baden-Baden, they resolved to create their own perfect therapeutic oil.
Working from their home, Mönchhof — a former monastery with a historic physic garden — the couple spent two years refining their formula. In 1931, they produced their first batch: an extraordinary oil with remarkable restorative qualities. Initially shared as gifts, demand quickly grew.
Production paused during the war due to shortages, and the precious formula was hidden for safekeeping. In 1948, their son Peter revived the blend, refining it with modern techniques and renaming it Olverum, from the Latin oleum verum — “true oil.”
For decades, Olverum remained a cult favourite, known by word of mouth. Its fortunes changed when Michael Hawksley discovered it in London and secured exclusive UK distribution. In 2014, the Hawksley family acquired the brand, and in 2015 relaunched Olverum for a new generation, preserving its unique heritage while preparing it for the future.
